Ratz Punch Ticket to FIHL Final Four
Ratz 2nd Star Chris Richardson
Ratz 3rd Star Jim Buchanan
Blacks Harbour – The Bonny River Ratz downed the Blackland Twisters of St. Stephen 6-3 and made franchise history Tuesday by advancing to the second round in the Fundy Industrial Hockey League Playoffs. This marked the first time they had not been ousted in the first round in the 3 year old league.
The Ratz lost game 1 by a score of 8-2, but roared back to take the next two contests in the best of three by identical 6-3 scores. The Ratz were lead in game three by Chris Richardson who notched a pair and Eric Lee, Mark Johnson, Joe Stevens, and Greg Justason each contributing singles. Warren Giesbrecht had a remarkable night between the pipes for the Ratz while Twisters goalie Bill Taylor was solid for his team. The Twisters got goals from Tom Van Wagoner, Mike England and Jeff Penny.
After the game, Ratz captain Joe Stevens reflected on his team’s performance. Stevens said, “I’d say the boys gave it 111 % in the last two games which is up at least 50 % from game 1. Warren Giesbrecht held us in the games and we got timely scoring. In game 3 we knew we had to get on board early in the game to grab the momentum. As we always say – the early bird gets the worm, but the second rat gets the cheese.”
Twisters GM Ryan Weatherby was pleased by his team’s performance but not the outcome. He said, “We scored 14 goals and they scored 14 goals; plus we scored one more goal against them all season so we knew it would be close. This has been fun playing in this league and we have a solid team to come back with next year.”
