Kingfishers Flex Offensive Muscles at Ratz Expense

Walsh and Groom Lead the Way
Walsh and Groom just after triumph Sunday night

Blacks Harbour, NB - Looking to avenge an earlier shootout loss to their rival Bonny River Ratz, the Fundy Kingfishers started strong and coasted to an easy 15 – 4 victory in Sunday night FIHL action at the Fundy Arena. Matty Walsh enjoyed a 4 goal night while team captain Greg Groom tallied a hat trick to lead the attack. Jeremy Mahar, Aaron MacQuarrie and Robin Heelis each added a pair, while Chad Chambers and Frank Richard had singles. Mark Johnson scored a pair for the Ratz and Jim Buchanan and Joe Stevens each had one. Gordie Anderson stood tall between the pipes for the Kingfishers and Warren Giesbrecht took the loss in net for the Ratz.
Despite the high score, Ratz team captain Joe Stevens stood on the podium and defended the goalie. Steven said, “When we got down early which was no fault of Warren’s, we had to gamble a bit and it cost us. Deer season just got over and now our focus is solely on hockey. I think if I was the Kingfishers, there must be some lucky stars out their somewhere to thank. Catching us on the night after deer season definitely affected the outcome of this contest but excuses are for losers but this is a reason and that’s something totally different. ”
Meanwhile a relieved Matty Walsh expressed disbelief at the score. He noted, “I saw they were missing some key guys and we were as well but this league is like that. Everybody has commitments and you never know who is going to show up on any given night. I could feel the Ratz clawing back some momentum and I’m glad the buzzer went when it did. An eleven goal lead is never safe when you’re playing the Ratz. I do want to send a big shout out to Gordie Anderson for being there when we needed him. Good stuff.”
